SUCCESSFULLY to build up the human figure
in a drawing, painting or statue, either from
imagination or from a model, the artist or sculptor
must be possessed of a keen sense of construction.
The human body, with its varied beauty of
construction, character and action, is so complex
that it is essential for the student, artist and
sculptor not only to have a clear knowledge of its
intricate forms, but a comprehensive understanding
and a habit of simple treatment in order to
apply this knowledge to its artistic end.
The artist is immediately concerned with the
external and the apparent. He views nature as
color, tone, texture and light and shade, but back
of his immediate concern, whether he be figure
painter or illustrator, in order to render the
human form with success, he stands in need of
skill in the use of his knowledge of structure, of
his understanding of action and of his insight into
character. These things require a period of profound
academic study.
When we consider the infinite variety of action
of the human form, its suppleness, grace and
strength of movement in the expression of the
fleeting action, and farther consider that the surface
of the body is enveloped in effects of light
and shade, iridescent color and delicate tone, it is
not to be wondered at that the student's eye is
readily blinded to the hidden construction of the
form.
At this stage of the student's advancement a
careful study of artistic anatomy, as elucidated
by Richter, Marshall or Duval, familiarizing him
with the bony structure of the skeleton, and the
location, attachment and function of the muscles,
will not only be helpful in furthering his own
research, but will enable him the more readily to
understand the theory of construction of the
human body as presented in this book.

G. K. Chesterton, fue un escritor y periodista británico de inicios del siglo XX. Cultivó, entre otros géneros, el ensayo, la narración, la biografía, la lírica, el periodismo y el libro de viajes.
Se han referido a él como el «príncipe de las paradojas». Su personaje más famoso es el Padre Brown, un sacerdote católico de apariencia ingenua, cuya agudeza psicológica lo vuelve un formidable detective, y que aparece en más de cincuenta historias reunidas en cinco volúmenes, publicados entre 1911 y 1935.
Gilbert Keith nació en Campden Hill, Londres, el 29 de mayo de 1874, en el seno de una familia de clase media. Chesterton da comienzo a su Autobiografía relatando el día, año y lugar de su nacimiento. La forma en la que ofrece esa información permite apreciar su fe en la tradición humana, ya que, en su opinión, sólo a través de ésta se pueden conocer muchas cosas que de otra forma no se podrían saber.
A una edad no muy avanzada, Edward tuvo un problema cardiaco, por lo que debió abandonar el negocio familiar, pero continuaba percibiendo una renta de él. Fue entonces cuando se pudo dedicar tranquilamente a su jardín, a la literatura y al arte.

Su educación se iniciaría en la preparatoria «Colet Court», en 1881; su enseñanza en aquel lugar duró hasta 1886, y en enero de 1887 ingresó a un colegio privado de nombre «St. Paul» en Hammersmith Road. Gilbert describiría el sistema educativo, o mejor dicho, lo que él opinaba de este como «ser instruido por alguien que yo no conocía, acerca de algo que no quería saber».?
Luego estudiaría dibujo y pintura en la «Slade School of Fine Art» (1893-1896), se volvió diestro como dibujante y más adelante llegó a contribuir con ilustraciones tanto para sus propias obras, como es el caso de Barbagrís en escena, cuanto para los libros de su amigo Hilaire Belloc.
En su juventud se volvió agnóstico «militante». En 1901 contrajo matrimonio con Frances Blogg, anglicana practicante, quien ayudó en un principio a que G. K. se acercara al cristianismo. La inquietud de Chesterton se puede ver claramente en el siguiente artículo:

«No puedes evadir el tema de Dios, siendo que hables sobre cerdos, o sobre la teoría binominal estás, todavía, hablando sobre Él. Ahora, si el cristianismo es… un fragmento de metafísica sin sentido inventado por unas pocas personas, entonces, por supuesto, defenderlo será simplemente hablar de metafísica sin sentido una y otra vez. Pero si el cristianismo resultara ser verdadero – entonces, defenderlo podría significar hablar sobre cualquier cosa, o sobre todas las cosas. Luego, con el pasar de los años se acercó cada vez más al Cristianismo. Volvió a la religión de su infancia, al anglicanismo. A la idea del superhombre planteada por Nietzsche y seguida por Shaw y Wells respondió con un ensayo titulado ¿Por qué creo en el Cristianismo?:

Si un hombre se nos acerca (como muchos se nos acercarán muy pronto) a decir, "Yo soy una nueva especie de hombre. Yo soy el superhombre. He abandonado la piedad y la justicia"; nosotros debemos contestar: "Sin duda tú eres nuevo, pero no estás cerca de ser un hombre perfecto, porque él ya ha estado en la mente de Dios. Nosotros hemos caído con Adán y nosotros ascenderemos con Cristo, pero preferimos caer con Satán, que ascender contigo".

intended to add to, interpret, or relieve a duty imposed by Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR).
It is essential for persons using this handbook also to become familiar with and apply the pertinent parts of 14 CFR and
the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM). Performance standards for demonstrating competence required for pilot
certification are prescribed in the appropriate WSC practical test standard.

Greenmantle es la segunda de las cinco novelas de John Buchan con el personaje de Richard Hannay , publicado por primera vez en 1916 por Hodder & Stoughton , Londres . Es una de las dos novelas de Hannay ambientadas durante la Primera Guerra Mundial , la otra es el Sr. Standfast (1919); La primera y más conocida aventura de Hannay, The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), se desarrolla en el período inmediatamente anterior a la guerra.

The Thirty-Nine Steps es una novela de aventuras del autor escocés John Buchan . Apareció por primera vez como una serie en Blackwood's Magazine en agosto y septiembre de 1915, antes de ser publicado en forma de libro en octubre de ese año por William Blackwood and Sons , Edinburgh.  Es la primera de las cinco novelas con Richard Hannay , un héroe de todas las acciones con un labio superior rígido y una habilidad milagrosa para salir de situaciones pegajosas.
La novela formó la base para una serie de adaptaciones cinematográficas: la versión de Alfred Hitchcock en 1935 ; un remake de color de 1959 ; una versión de 1978 que es quizás la más fiel a la novela; y una versión 2008 para la televisión británica . En 2003, el libro fue incluido en la encuesta de la BBC The Big Read sobre las "novelas más queridas" del Reino Unido.
John Buchan escribió The Thirty-Nine Steps mientras estaba enfermo en la cama con una úlcera duodenal , una enfermedad que permaneció con él toda su vida. La novela fue su primera " sorpresa ", como la llamó, una historia que combina dramas personales y políticos. La novela marcó un punto de inflexión en la carrera literaria de Buchan y presentó a su héroe aventurero, Richard Hannay . Describió una "sorpresa" como una aventura en la que los eventos de la historia son poco probables y el lector solo puede creer que realmente sucedieron.
El hijo de Buchan, William, escribió más tarde que el nombre del libro se originó cuando la hija del autor estaba contando las escaleras en una residencia de ancianos en Broadstairs , donde Buchan estaba convaleciendo. "Había una escalera de madera que bajaba a la playa. Mi hermana, que tenía unos seis años, y que había aprendido a contar correctamente, los bajó y anunció alegremente: hay 39 escalones". Algún tiempo después, la casa fue demolida y una sección de las escaleras, completa con una placa de bronce, fue enviada a Buchan.  La misteriosa frase Treinta y nueve pasos , mencionada por primera vez por el personaje Franklin Scudder, se convierte en el título de la novela y la solución a su significado es un hilo que recorre toda la historia.
